RECOGNISE AND RESPOND: Suicide Prevention Training

Support Act is pleased to offer training with one of Australia’s leading suicide intervention training organisations, Black Dog Institute . This service is available for free to people working in the Australian music or creative industries.

This is a structured, evidence-based online course designed to help participants recognise the signs that someone may be thinking about suicide and respond safely and appropriately.

While the training itself is not industry-specific, access is provided free of charge to people working in the Australian music and creative industries.

Why suicide prevention training?

Suicide prevention matters across all sectors and communities.

Support Act’s Mental Health and Wellbeing in Music and Live Performing Arts survey found that people working in music are significantly more likely to report suicidal thoughts or behaviours compared to the general population.

Building confidence in recognising warning signs and responding early can make a meaningful difference.

Suicide prevention training helps reduce fear, stigma and hesitation by equipping people with practical, structured intervention skills.

This 90-minute online training teaches participants how to:

  • Recognise warning signs that someone may be thinking about suicide
  • Start a conversation about suicide safely and directly
  • Respond using a structured four-step intervention model
  • Connect someone to appropriate professional support
  • Maintain their own boundaries and wellbeing while supporting others

The program includes:

  • Interactive simulations and real-world scenarios
  • Customised content based on learner location and needs
  • Evidence-based material developed by experts in suicide prevention, psychology, education and public health
  • Lifetime access to resources and refresher materials

The training has been shown to increase participants’ confidence in identifying suicide risk and intervening appropriately.

This training is available to any Australian-based creative industry worker:

  • Musicians, artists & creatives
  • Crew and production staff
  • Managers & team leaders
  • People who support someone working in the music or creative industries

Participants must be aged 15 years or older.

No prior training is required.

Format: Self-paced online learning
Duration: 90 minutes total
Access window: 45 days to complete after enrolment

You can pause, save progress and return to the program at any time within the access period.

Clinically speaking, given elevated rates of suicidal ideation reported among workers in the music and creative industries, building suicide prevention capability is critical. This nationally accredited training equips participants to recognise warning signs of suicide risk, respond using a structured intervention model and connect individuals to appropriate professional support. By increasing early identification and intervention capacity within the community, the program directly contributes to suicide prevention and the alleviation of acute psychological distress.
